Julie had already worked with me on several issues when
she invited me to the stable for a session of equine
therapy with Seri. I had an approaching exhibit deadline
coming up but had been experiencing horrible artist block.
But then Julie asked me some questions and I started going
through my answers and getting to my core beliefs. Out of
nowhere, Seri came up behind me and started nibbling on my
hair and licking my ears like I was her new boyfriend.
When we identified what I was thinking and feeling right at
that moment, it sent me back to the studio where the next
day I started one of the best paintings of my career.
Another time I spent a session hosing and brushing Seri
while I talked to her as if she were my nonjudgmental
confidant. There's a freedom in speaking to an entity so
large and strong but who won't talk back or interrupt. It
encouraged me to say things out loud that I heard
differently for the first time. My hands on the horse
connected me to the oneness of all things.
There's also nothing better than getting counseled while
you're breathing fresh air. In fact, all five senses are
alive while you're with Seri and the other horses, dogs,
trees, grass, and blue skies.
